Top 10 Tuesday: Books I’ve Read 2015

Welcome back to Top Ten Tuesday!

The Top Ten Tuesday Tag is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is:

TOP TEN BOOKS I’VE READ IN 2015

These are in no particular order…

1. A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC V. E. SCHWAB

This was the first book I’ve ever read by V.E. Schwab, and I absolutely adored it (Check out my review here). I loved the characters and I loved the world building. If you have a thing for sci-fi/fantasy crossovers than I suggest you check this book out. Also, the cover is beautiful.

2. AN EMBER IN THE ASHES – SABAA TAHIR

This book was making the rounds on booktube and in the bloggerverse, so I gave it a read and was not disappointed. A fantasy novel taking place in a world based off of Ancient Rome. I loved the mythology that went into this one. Check out my full review here.

3. INJUSTICE (VOL 1-3)

SUPERMAN HAS KILLED THE JOKER! I REPEAT THE JOKER IS DEAD! SUPERMAN IS THE LORD OF EARTH! ALL HELL HAS BROKEN LOOSE. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

Injustice is the prequel to the successful video game of the same name. I was a little hesitant at first. I thought it would just be a cash grab to pad the sales of the game. Was I wrong. This comic series is an awesome elseworld tale where all hell has broken loose. If you don’t ship Batman and Superman by the end of the series, well I don’t know you.

4. THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS – M.R. CAREY

In a world oversaturated with post apocalyptic zombie novels, I give you another post apocalyptic zombie novel. Seriously though, this book is amazing. It also kicked off my creepy children book binge. I don’t want to go too much into this book because spoilers but you should read it. Check out my full (and slightly spoilery review) here.

5. CONSUMED – DAVID CRONENBERG

DEATH TO VIDEODROME! LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH! Canadian Director David Cronenberg wrote a novel, and it hurt me how good it was. This book sat on my shelf for a few months before I finally brought myself to pick it up and read it. Then, being the horrible human being that I am, forced it onto Chelsey. We filmed a review for the book and I wrote a post, both can be found here. So if you’re looking for something in the vein of Philip K. Dick or Nabokov, then give this book a read.

6. VICIOUS – V.E. SCHWAB

Two science students discovered how to give themselves superpowers, fast forward ten years later and they’re trying to kill one another. This book had everything I love: ruined relationships, cool powers, and just general insanity. Go read it.

7. THE BOY WHO DREW MONSTERS – KEITH DONOHUE

The next creepy child book that I read this year. Monsters had a gothic horror vibe which I really liked. The final twist was pretty easy to see coming, but was still a lot of fun. Now excuse me as I go and find everything else Donohue has ever written.

8. AS YOU WISH – CARY ELWES

The Princess Bride is one of my all time favourite movies, which made this book a must read. Cary Elwes gives a behind the scenes look at what it was like being in one of the most beloved movies ever. Did you know it took them two weeks to film that sword fight? I didn’t.

9. THE NEST – KENNETH OPPEL

A horror novel in the style of Coraline, by one of my childhood favourite’s Kenneth Oppel. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this novel at BEA. I think the best way to describe it is unsettling. Oppel manages to keep you guessing till the very end, are these events actually happening or are they just going on inside our protagonist’s head?

10. THE WALLS AROUND US – NOVA REM SUMA

It seems horror and ballerinas have started going hand and hand. The Walls Around Us is this beautiful little horror story following two girls, one alive and one long dead. The prose alone is worth the five starts that I gave it on goodreads. Check out my review here.

So there you have it, my top reads of 2015 so far. It’ll be interesting to see how much this list changes when we get to December.

What have been some of your favourite books this year so far?

Alexandra is always looking for the next book she can devour. She has a love hate relationship with teen fiction specifically when it comes to fantasy, post apocalyptic and failed shakespeare adaptations.

Have your say!
