This question is a hard one for me to answer. It’s impossible for me to settle on a single series because I keep coming up with other series’ that I like. So instead of talking about one that I love I will talk about a few of them. You will probably find a pattern in my choice of books. 🙂
Note: I’m not going to talk about favourite trilogies, because then this post would go on forever.
Sandman, by Neil Gaiman
I could go on forever about how much I love these books. When I used to work at Chapters a friend of mine recommended this series to me. So during my break, I grabbed the first volume and was…. not really impressed. The thing about Sandman, is that the art changes and sometimes is a little bit hard to get used to. In the first volume the art was very detailed and the gore was a little too much for me. This was not the first book that I had read by Neil Gaiman, and I new that I liked his other work, so I pushed through. By the end of the first volume I was hooked completely.
Sandman follows The Sandman aka Dream of the Endless. He is also referred to as Morpheus. The series starts out with Dream being captured by accident. The group who captured him had been trying to summon and capture his sister Death. After 100 years, Dream is able to escape and goes off to find all of his objects th
at had once given him power. Throughout the rest of the series, Gaiman blends
Sandman is my favourite series of comic books. If you like comics or graphic novels give this series a chance.myth, fiction and fact to create a story that spans all of time. It is this blending of everything that made me love this series so much. The way all of the mythology and religious references fit together like puzzle pieces offers a different view on the world, one more unified and it makes you believe that magic just might exist.
The Mortal Instruments, by Cassandra Clare
The Mortal Instruments originally started out as a trilogy, but will now consist of six books. The series follows Clary, a girl who finds out that she is a Shadowhunter. Shadowhunters are a group of people who have heightened ability and fight against demons, monsters and try to keep the supernatural world in check. When her Mother falls into a coma, Clary joins up with the local group of Shadowhunters to try and save her. The books main message is how the past can effect the future, and that you can never truly put it behind you. Clare tackles, love triangles, incest, family secrets, teen angst and the supernatural in this awesome series.
What I loved about these books originally was how I managed to love all three of them. I have always found with trilogies that the books range on levels of likeabilty. The middle book woulds always be my least favourite because it would only exist to build up towards the ending. With the Mortal Instruments Trilogy this was not the case. The story was so well paced that the middle book did not feel like “the middle book”. When Care released that there would be three more books making the trilogy a series, I was excited but still a little worried. When City of Fallen Angels was released at first I was not too impressed. The book seemed to drag on and nothing new was happening. The first half of the book felt like a rehash of the other books. But once it hit the halfway point, well it got INTENSE. I’m hoping when the next book comes out, it’ll continue on in that direction.
A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin
This comic just shows the level of screwing, George R.R. Martin does to his readers.
So, I kind of knew about the existence of these books from my hours spent in book stores, but I never picked them up. Like a good chunk of the population it was the HBO Show Game of Thrones that introduced me to George R.R. Martin’s intensive fantasy world. The reason I love The Song of Ice and Fire, books is because of how expansive the world is and how intertwined the characters are. The books drag you in and you get ridiculously attached to the characters only to have them murdered in horrible ways in front of you.
Once essay season is over I’ll be able to start book four. Until then I’m going to be stuck with one of the world’s best cliff hangers I have ever read.
